Alarming Number of Singaporeans Fall Prey To Lottery Scams - 11/05/2007
Over the past month, one Singaporean became the victim of a lottery scam every day. Although, the police in Singapore had issued a warning about lottery scams in August, the number of people falling prey to such scams remains high.
In total, this year the police received 550 reports of lottery scams with losses of over $2 million dollars. Police noted that this amount is about three times higher than last year.
Most often, fraudsters posed as staff of an overseas company, and called the victim to conduct a survey or to invite them to an event overseas. Afterwards, their accomplice would notify the victim that they won a prize. However, to claim their money or prize they would need to pay a small fee.
Police spokesperson ASP Lim Tung Li said, although the fraudsters changed their tactics often, all the scams shared some similarities. These similarities included asking the victim for either their bank account details or for some fee in advance, before they could receive the prize.
