Identity theft is when someone steals your personal information like a social security card, driver's license, or credit card and uses the item to establish an account under your name, but without your permission or you knowing about it. [br][br]The best way to recognize if you have been a victim of identity theft is when you start getting harassing phone calls from credits concerning accounts you don't know anything about. Or you notice you start getting credit card bills in the mail for credit cards you never applied for. One person had a sheriff come to his home claiming the sheriff had a warrant for his arrest over a fraudulent transaction the man didn't even know about. [br][br]If you notice money coming out of your checking account when you never withdrew it, or you notice bills coming to you in the mail you never applied for, you could be the victim of identity theft. [P]There is another cause of identity theft, someone giving your name to police when they are arrested and the police not doing their job and verifying who they are. If you run a credit report, you can find id theft fairly easy, but if you cannot or do not have a criminal background check run and someone has used your name during a crime, you will never know. It is hard to get a criminal background check done. Most police, the FBI and state will not run one until you are arrested and then and only then will you be able to find if someone has used your name and been arrested and then good luck on getting is fixed. Your name will become an AKA (also known as) under the persons real identity and if you are ever arrested, it is up to you to prove who you are not them.[/P] |

Identity theft occurs when someone other than you represents themselves as you. Most people are totally unaware of it until they start getting billed for services or goods they never received or ordered. I have a friend in California who received a bill from Sears for appliances ordered for and delivered in Illinois. Another friend received a follow-up phone call from a cell phone company, wondering why she didn't pay her bill. While she was trying to resolve that issue, Radio Shack called to ask how she liked her new computer. I have an unpaid bill on my credit report for a hotel stay in Las Vegas that I've never even visited. Ironically, there is someone living on my street with the same name. |

Identity theft costs business and individuals $53 billion dollars annually
In 2003, Americans spent 300 million hours resolving issues related to identity theft.
70% of all identity theft cases are perpetrated by a co-worker or employee of an affiliated business.
