You probably heard of the IRS fraud. This is where a tax preparer files a fraudulent return in behalf of a tax preparer. If you are a tax payer and you want to avoid becoming a victim there are a series of suggestive ways to avoid such a situation.[br][br]When you seek out a tax preparer, always avoid those who claim they can get you a larger refund than what you have been accustomed to getting, or that is larger than what other tax preparers claim to get you. You also need to avoid those who charge a fee based on the amount of your refund. Legitimate tax preparers will only charge you a flat fee for filing the 1040 form, and a smaller fee for any additional forms.[br][br]When you hire a tax preparer, you must make sure the person signs your tax return and provides you a copy of the return for your records. This is how reputable tax preparers work. Most reputable tax preparers are Certified Pubklic Accountants (CPA), Accredited Tax Preparers, Enrolled Agents, Licensed Public Accounts, or Tax Attorneys.[br][br]The bottom line for you as a tax payer is to protect yourself. If you deal with a unethical tax preparer, you are still responsible for your tax return. The IRS institutes stiff penalities for those who avoid paying their taxes, knowingly or unknowningly. In fact the penalty for income tax evasion is five years imprisonment and a $250,000 fine.[br][br] |
