I was running my usual backup program last night, but this time I received a read error message on the screen, and which time the backup system stopped. What caused the error? [br]

Based on what was stated in your question, it appears the backup software was attempting to copy all files on a schedule when it started to read a file that was either corrupted or damaged. Since backup software works by successfully copying files from one source to another, in order for this process to work, every file has to be readable and writable. [br][br]As for the error message, the backup software guided the head of the backup system to read each file. When the head tried to read the one file, it couldn't considering the file was not readable. This could have been because the file may have been loaded in memory, was being used by another program, or the file got corrupted. [br][br]The best deal here is to shutdown the backup system, check the file that was corrupted and see if it may have been loaded in memory. You can check this out by hitting CTRL ALT DEL and look at the Applications tab. If you see the file listed, you can highlight the file and click End Task button. This will close the file. If the file is not listed, this may mean the file is being used by another program. This is especially true if the file is a Word document or Excel spreadsheet. If this is not the case, the file is more likely corrupted. Take the file out of the backup schedule and restart the backup. If the backup completes with no errors, you know what happened and why.
