I cruise on the Internet a lot and noticed my computer is slowing down. My present antivirus program did not detect any viruses on my machine, but yet my machine is acting funny. Why didn't my antivirus detect any viruses? [br]

The primary reason your antivirus program did not detect any viruses on your system is because the virus definition file has not been updated. Another way to say this is the antivirus program has not updated itself in a while. [br][br]Usually, most full-fledged antivirus programs will update their virus database every day or so. But if you have your antivirus automatic update turned off, your software will not update itself. This will create a problem because when you log onto your PC, your antivirus program will continue to work and scan your hard drive, but if there is any new viruses on your system, your antivirus software will not detect it. [br][br]The first step for you is to run your automatic virus update first. it is called Live Update. After Live Update finishes, you may have to reboot your system. When it reboots, the new virus definition file will install, which will allow the antivirus software to scan the hard drive, and look for the newer virus threat. This time the threat will be found since the virus definition file now has that virus included. [br][br]

You can protect your computer from viruses without expensive software. Instead, follow these simple tips:

Stay up-to-date on all system updates.

Don't download any email attachments you weren't expecting.

Avoid freeware and peer-to-peer sharing sites.

Use alternative web browsers and email software.
