I heard some people claim that McAFee, who sells adware programs,
unknowingly advertised their adware product by means of a pop-up that
had an adware program embedded in it. Is this true?

This is unfortunately true. The problem for McAFee is they didn't even know it was happening. The mishap was discovered by the research team at Aluria
Software, a company owned by Earthlink.  It seems a pop-up advertisement for its anti-spyware software was distributed through a network that contained an adware program. [br][br]The actual pop-up happened to be a part of a campaign that was started by Direct Revenue LLC. Direct Revenue provides adware that installs itself and displays a pop-up ad on a user's computer. The ad itself promoted a security program against spyware. [br][br]The particular ad in question was distributed with Kazaa. It also comes with a movie viewing software called "I Watch Now." You can also get it by downloading screensavers and online games. [br][br]McAFee is attempting to fix the problem as soon as they can track down where the ad originated from. [br][br]
