How DOCSIS Works

DOCSIS refers to the cable modems and other equipment that is used to support data transmission over a cable television network. DOCSIS stands for "Data Over Cable Interface Specification" which is the standard that is set for high speed data transfer from an interface. DOCSIS provides a way for you to access the Internet over your existing cable television connection infrastructure so you can send and retrieve data over the same connection as you watch your favorite television shows.

How DOCSIS Works

DOCSIS is a certified cable modem project that defines the requirements for the interface that is to be used with cable modems. The interface standard determines the high-speed data transmission protocol over television system networks. DOCSIS also provides the standard for which the cable modem manufacturers create cable modems that are DOCSIS compliant and within the protocols for cable industry equipment.

The DOCSIS standard involves different components which include the cable modem which is acquired by the end user with the intent to establish Internet access over a cable television network, and the cable modem termination system which is regulated by the cable service provider. The last component is establishing the high speed connection through a DOCSIS protocol for a signal between the cable modem and the cable termination system.

Before a cable company can establish a high speed connection using DOCSIS standards, it is necessary to upgrade the coaxial network in the cable line to provide a return path for upstream traffic which creates a two-way system in the cable lines.

Benefits of DOCSIS

DOCSIS standard provide benefits to both the cable providers and the consumer by requiring production of cable connection products that are standards-based to allow the manufacturers to create enhanced features at prices that are competitive. Additionally the cable providers can provider higher quality services that allow access to a broad range of applications. DOCSIS also provides the consumer with a way to achieve a low cost high-speed Internet connection without having to invest a lot of time and money upfront.

DOCSIS Security

DOCSIS contains standards for privacy that include a Baseline Privacy Interface that supports MAC layer security services. The standards for the Baseline Privacy Interface provides data privacy for the cable modem users and also allows for service protection by the installer to prevent unauthorized users from gaining access to the network. It also provides a means for encrypting data flows across the network with key refresh configurations to increase protection on the network.

Identity theft comes in many forms.

A person’s identity can be 'borrowed' for the purpose of creating fictional credit cards or a person’s entire identity can be usurped to the point where they can have difficulty proving that they really are who they claim to be.

Up to 18% of identity theft victims take as long as four years to realize that their identity has been stolen.

There are many ways to protect your personal identity and many steps you can take to prevent your identity from being stolen:

*Never give out unnecessary personal information
*Never provide bank details or social security numbers over the Internet
*Always remain aware of who is standing behind you when you type in your personal credit codes at ATM machines and at supermarket checkout swipe machines.
